The pencil post bed is one of the simplest but classic New England designs. The square feet transition to a graceful tall octagonal post that can support a canopy and drapery or mosquito net. The posts are fabricated by hand using a drawknife and hand plane. Note the holes in the foot-rail which show that these beds were originally fitted with a support of crossed ropes to hold a thick feather mattress – warm and cozy in the cold New England winters.
